‘Food’ on Channel 4

I tuned in to this programme expecting some insights into our relationship with food. It certainly did, but not in the way I expected. There was very little connection or questioning about what constitutes ‘food,’ and awareness of what we put into our mouths, or how it gets there. It was focussed instead on the usual distractions and confusions: questions of food ‘value’ which concentrated on money alone; dubious scientific comparisons, with natural fruit sugars being equated with processed sugar then juices labelled ‘saint’ or ‘sinner’ in a ludicrous sideshow piece; Jay Rayner exploring various ways of satiating his relentless appetite; and the ‘colour piece’ on Nigerian Bean growers revealing the heartbreaking, complex entanglements made between Western Supermarkets and growers around the world to supply produce which does not make any sense, for us, or the growers.  Check the episode here.
